Dominos stepped onto the balcony and whistled softly, waiting until the pigeon floated out of the sky and landed on his shoulder. It was all he could do not to crush it in rage; he hadn’t ever signed up for a war, let alone under the command of a man who had dumped him when someone better came along.

Bastard, he thought, and smiled to himself. Who knew what he could do, in the middle of an army Akron would fondly imagine to be a secret, but wouldn’t be anything like a secret. If Shayde moved quickly enough, he might just manage to get Akron and the newcomers before they could even leave the lands, which would really show him how stupid he was.

Dominos carefully attached the small tube of paper to the pigeon, taking care to ensure that it wouldn’t fall off. He had to admire Shayde’s plan; an intelligent talking beast would be noticed by the wards, if not kept out altogether, but a trained pigeon wouldn’t be noticed at all. Hints of spider venom would keep the hawks from chasing them and killing them – Sigmund might notice the tube of paper – and the pigeon would make it all the way to Shayde’s base within a few hours.

“Fly,” he muttered, tossing the bird into the air. It fluttered its wings and headed away from the castle, heading out into the darkness. Dominos smiled once and headed down to the stables. The Knight Errant would be there, waiting for him; he could wait forever, as far as Dominos could care.

He smiled as he passed a tired maid, her nightgown almost falling off. “I think I have time,” he said aloud, and ordered her to come with him. Twenty minutes later, in a much better mood, he mounted his horse and followed the Knight Errant on the road to Newcastle.
